Grover dental is a excellent dentist practice if you have anxiety. They're very mindful of their patients and they make sure you're doing okay throughout the whole process. If you need a minute they'll accommodate you as best as they can. I had an anxiety attack through a filling getting done and both Dr. Whig as well as his assistant Zel did a great job talking me through the attack and gave me time to settle. Would highly recommend

I just recently had a cleaning, x rays, and check up done. I was treated by Amanda and she was a phenomenal hygienist. Attentive, funny, kind, and knowledgeable. Even with interruptions during the cleaning, she handled it very professionally and made sure I was comfortable. I will definitely request her to be my hygienist in the future! Excellent service from the front desk staff and dentist as well!

Why Teeth Become Stained or Discoloured

Over time, many people notice that their smile does not look as bright as it once did. Teeth can become stained or discoloured for several reasons, from everyday foods and drinks to natural changes that happen as we age.

Surface Stains

The outer layer of your teeth, known as enamel, is incredibly strong. In fact, it is the hardest substance in the human body. However, enamel is not completely solid. It contains tiny openings that can absorb pigments from certain foods and beverages, leading to visible stains over time.

Common causes of surface staining include:

  • Dark-coloured drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, cola and certain fruit juices
  • Foods and sauces with strong pigments, including tomato-based sauces and soy sauce
  • Sugary foods and drinks that can contribute to changes in the appearance of your smile
  • Brightly coloured fruits such as berries, cherries and pomegranates
  • Tobacco products

Lifestyle habits can also play a role in tooth discolouration. Poor nutrition and inconsistent oral hygiene may allow stains to build up and make teeth appear less vibrant.

Deep Tooth Discolouration

Not all tooth discolouration comes from the surface. The inner layer of your tooth, located beneath the enamel, naturally has a more yellow or grey tone. As you get older, enamel can gradually become thinner, allowing more of this natural colour to show through.

Other factors can also affect the colour of the inner tooth structure, including certain medications, illnesses and dental injuries. These types of stains may be more noticeable and can require professional whitening treatments to improve their appearance.

When Is the Right Time to Whiten Your Teeth?

Many patients choose to whiten their teeth before receiving cosmetic or restorative dental treatments. Teeth whitening can brighten your natural teeth, but it will not change the colour of restorations such as crowns, bridges, veneers or fillings.

If you are planning to have dental work completed in the near future, our dentists may recommend whitening your teeth first. This allows your future restorations to be created to better match your brighter smile.

Professional teeth whitening can help reduce both surface stains and deeper discolouration, giving you a fresher, more confident smile. Our team can help determine if whitening is the right option for your goals and recommend a treatment approach that fits your needs.

Top Teeth Whitening Options

Teeth whitening is a popular way to brighten your smile and improve the appearance of your teeth without choosing more involved cosmetic treatments. Whether you prefer the convenience of an in-office appointment or the flexibility of whitening at home, professional options can help you achieve a noticeably brighter smile while supporting your comfort throughout the process.

Professional Teeth Whitening Treatment

For patients looking for faster results, an in-office teeth whitening treatment can be an excellent choice. During your appointment, a professional whitening solution is carefully applied to your teeth using specially designed trays. The treatment is designed to break down stains and brighten the natural shade of your smile.

Because the process is completed under the care of dental professionals, your treatment can be customized to your needs. Professional whitening can provide visible results quickly while helping reduce the chance of unwanted sensitivity or irritation when compared with some over-the-counter options.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kit

If you prefer to whiten your teeth on your own schedule, a customized take-home whitening kit may be the right option. These kits allow you to brighten your smile from the comfort of your home while still receiving professional guidance.

Unlike generic store-bought whitening products, professional take-home trays are made to fit the unique shape of your teeth. This personalized fit helps distribute the whitening solution more evenly and can improve comfort during treatment.

With regular use, take-home whitening kits can gradually brighten your smile over several weeks. They are a convenient option for patients who want professional-quality results while maintaining their everyday routine.

Cost of Professional Teeth Whitening in Hamilton

The cost of professional teeth whitening in Hamilton can vary depending on the type of treatment you choose and the results you are hoping to achieve. In-office whitening performed by dental professionals typically ranges from approximately $600 to $1,200, while customized take-home whitening kits are often a more affordable option, with costs ranging from around $300 to $600.

The difference in price comes down to factors such as the strength of the whitening products, the level of professional support included and how quickly you want to see results. Both options can help brighten your smile, but each offers different benefits.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

Professional in-office whitening is a great option for patients who want noticeable results in a shorter amount of time. Benefits include:

  • Treatment performed by experienced dental professionals
  • Carefully applied whitening products to help minimize gum irritation and sensitivity
  • Access to professional-grade whitening solutions that are stronger than many over-the-counter options
  • Faster results, often achieved during a single appointment

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits

A professional take-home whitening kit provides the convenience of whitening your smile from home while still receiving guidance from your dental team. Benefits include:

  • Professional-strength whitening products that are more effective than many store-bought options
  • A gradual whitening process that can create noticeable improvements within a few weeks
  • Custom-made trays designed to fit your teeth comfortably and help distribute the whitening solution evenly

Frequently Asked Questions

Brushing your teeth regularly is an important part of keeping your smile healthy, but it may not remove all causes of discolouration. Plaque can build up when bacteria from food and drinks are not fully removed from your teeth. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with regular brushing and requires professional cleaning.

This buildup can create a yellow appearance around your teeth and along the gumline. Maintaining good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist for regular cleanings can help keep your smile looking its best.

Professional teeth whitening is considered a safe and effective way to brighten your smile when completed as directed. Some patients may notice temporary tooth sensitivity during or shortly after treatment, especially during the first few applications.

Following the instructions provided with your whitening treatment can help support a comfortable experience and reduce the chance of sensitivity.

Teeth whitening only changes the colour of natural tooth enamel. Dental restorations such as veneers, crowns and fillings will not become lighter with whitening treatments.

If you have restorations on your front teeth, whitening your natural teeth may create a difference in colour. Our dental team can help you understand how whitening may affect your smile before beginning treatment.

Most dental insurance plans do not cover teeth whitening because it is considered a cosmetic treatment. However, coverage can vary between providers. We recommend checking with your insurance company to confirm your benefits.

Our team can also provide an estimate that you can submit to your provider if needed.

After whitening your teeth, it is helpful to limit foods and drinks that can cause staining. A simple way to think about it is to avoid anything that could leave a noticeable mark on a white shirt.

Common staining items include:

Coffee, tea, red wine and dark-coloured beverages
Soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and fruit juices with strong colours
Tomato sauce, curry, soy sauce and other deeply pigmented foods
Chocolate and certain dark-coloured foods

Making mindful choices and maintaining good brushing and flossing habits can help extend your whitening results.

The results of teeth whitening can vary from person to person. Depending on the type of whitening treatment you choose, your lifestyle habits and how well you care for your smile, results may last anywhere from six months to several years.

Regular dental visits, good oral hygiene and limiting staining foods and drinks can help you enjoy a brighter smile for longer.
